Just as Michelangelo chipped away at a block of stone to reveal the magnificent David, every member of our team has untapped potential waiting to be unleashed. As leaders of teams, we have an obligation to lead them to realize their gifts and achieve their full potential.

We also owe it to ourselves to realize the same. When we achieve greatness – our purpose and calling - we stand as a model for others and an inspiration to those who may be questioning their place in the world.

Influences from our surroundings shape our beliefs about ourselves and what we can achieve. However, negative influences can hinder our courage, adaptability, determination, and confidence. To realize our true potential, we must recognize these barriers as the mountain that obscures our possibilities.

Like Michelangelo's vision for David within the marble, we must help our team members see beyond limitations and overcome criticism and self-doubt. Over time, interactions with the world around us lead to beliefs that may not accurately reflect who we are or what we can accomplish. To break free from these misconceptions and establish new beliefs aligned with our aspirations, we need to unleash our inner courage and allow our talents to shine.

These realizations are true for us and everyone around us. We all have self-doubt. We all wrestle with the imposter from time-to-time. We all question our place. Our team members are people just like us. As leaders we need to be aware of this and always working to guide them to achieve their purpose. We must also create a culture that is free from the negative effects that lead to self-doubt and misconceptions.

As leaders, we begin this process by properly placing, training, and developing each member of our team.  We further develop them through coaching, crucial feedback, and recognizing growth minded behaviors. We support them by creating a culture that embraces excellence and winning as a team. We bring everyone to their peak by helping them see that there is, like Michelangelo, held deep inside us a masterpiece version of ourselves waiting to be uncovered.

As an employer, you may not believe it is your duty to develop the person as much as it is your responsibility to develop a good employee. This is a misguided belief that could not be further from the truth. No person can be great in one aspect of life while failing in another. We are intertwined human beings. Our personal and professional life is not free from overlapping behaviors. How we do one thing is how we do everything.

Where do we begin? Start with a conversation and then coaching. Begin with yourself before you move to your team. Ask them to walk through the same reflections you walked yourself through. Don’t be afraid to share your limiting beliefs and what you are doing to overcome. Letting them see you as human is not always a bad thing. By doing so you will be seen as credible for your willingness to be vulnerable.

  • Identify limiting beliefs: Analyze your core beliefs that hold you back from pursuing your dreams.

  • Rewrite your script: Replace false narratives such as "I'm not capable" or "I don't have what it takes" with empowering thoughts based on reality.

  • Overcome self-doubt: Successful individuals often experience self-doubt but learn to overcome it by rewiring their mindset towards positive thoughts and images of their desired future.

  • Implement supportive practices: Put into place proven strategies that align with your goals while eliminating self-defeating behaviors.

  • Set yourself free: By recognizing false beliefs about yourself and reworking your script while managing negative self-talk, you unlock incredible possibilities for personal growth.

By embracing this process of self-discovery and transformation, you will not only make a difference in your own life but also positively impact the lives of others around you. Help your team members carve out new possibilities for themself by unleashing the hidden beauty of your full potential.
