The Performance Dilemma: Strong Manager or Charismatic Leader?

Do you own a medical aesthetics practice but find yourself haunted by “Imposter Syndrome”? Do you see your leadership skills as half empty as opposed to half full? Are you thinking about launching your own medical aesthetics practice but find yourself doubting whether you have what it takes?

It is time to rethink those feelings and realize that successful practice owners and leaders come in all shapes and sizes. However, they all possess common qualities. Qualities that can be developed or improved upon by anyone who is self-aware and committed to becoming the best they can be.

There's a common perception that the highest-performing organizations are led by charismatic leaders with big personalities. While this may hold true in Hollywood, it's important to note that in today's world, a Gordon Gekko-type leader would not fare well and likely wouldn't stand the test of time, especially in the aesthetics industry.

The truth is, medical aesthetics practices do need strong leaders, but they don't necessarily have to fit the stereotypical image of an overpowering, larger-than-life personality who seems to have all the answers. In fact, some of the best-performing practices, both big and small, thrive under down-to-earth and genuine leaders. While there are outliers, history suggests that they are exceptions rather than the rule.

Many successful practices are led by lesser-known individuals who may not have dynamic personalities but are equally committed and driven to succeed. These leaders understand that leading a practice requires more than just a convincing vision for a better future. They recognize the limitations of resources and the specific requirements of the job, as well as their own opportunities for improvement.

Of course, there are certain essential qualities that every practice owner and leader must possess. They need to be intelligent, persuasive, and visionary. Additionally, effective leaders understand the importance of strategy, the role their team plays in achieving organizational goals, and the necessity of holding themselves and others accountable for results. All of which can be learned and developed.

When we step back and examine what truly makes the best-performing organizations strong, we often find that it's not solely the leader's ability to articulate a vision, but rather their capacity to influence and inspire the work being done at every level. The ability to motivate and guide teams towards desired outcomes is a crucial social skill that may be just as important as any other ability or expertise. In fact, many leaders with big egos ultimately fail because their self-centeredness wears on people and demotivates those they are meant to lead.

If you aspire to be a successful medical aesthetics practice owner or practice leader, it's worth considering the skills and abilities that truly lead to long-term success. You may discover that the strongest leaders possess much more than what Hollywood and social media have made us believe. You may also discover that you have what it takes and with a little self-reflection, hard work, and commitment to improving, you too can make your vision reality.
