Medical aesthetics has an outside appearance that is glamorous. There is also a tendency to view it as a personal service as opposed to medical.

Those standing on the outside may look at the aesthetics industry as an extension of the beauty industry. However, those of us working on the inside must never forget that medical aesthetics is about more than beauty. It is a medical practice and should always be treated as such.

While the physical presentation, location, and service offerings may vary greatly from traditional medical practices, the core is still the same. Medical regulations govern the medical side of the practice, which is typically 60%-75% of the business.

Knowing that there is a tendency, even internally, to view medical aesthetics differently than a traditional medical practice, managers and owners must be diligent when it comes to maintaining operational standards. Because of the nature of the business, many being in retail centers or in salon suite type studios, medical aesthetics practices must maintain these standards at a level that meets and exceeds that of a traditional medical practice.

Standards for patient care, client record retention and security, and pretreatment patient care are typically top of mind and common areas of focus for most practices. However, focus tends to drift when it comes to post care operational standards and facility upkeep. Less concentrated attention to after care operating standards can leave a client questioning the credibility and integrity of a provider and practice.

Client post treatment care is an area where many providers and practices fail. It is also one of the easiest areas to shine. Post treatment care is many times as simple as a follow up call to see how things are going. A simple check-in goes a long way with clients and leaves them feeling like they are working with caring professionals who have their best interests and well-being in mind. Post treatment follow up calls only takes a minute and can reap years of benefit. Not only is post care follow up a necessary part of appropriate care, but it also provides an opportunity to confirm the next appointment, ask for referrals, and simply further the development of the relationship.

Another seemingly overlooked area of focus is with the regular maintenance and upkeep of the physical location. An unkept practice can leave a client questioning how attentive a practice is to the little things. Little things like sterilization, sanitation, proper disposal of hazardous waste, etc. Think of it like you would a restroom at a restaurant. If the restroom is filthy the impression may be that the kitchen is treated the same.

As such, a clean and well-maintained practice communicates attention to detail, which naturally creates an impression about how the non-client facing side is likely managed and maintained. Pay attention to high touch areas, like windows, coffee tables, counter tops, coffee machines/dispensers, restrooms, doors and door handles, shelves, etc. Don’t forget to do a regular review of painted surfaces. Over time, walls and trim get nicked up and marred. Those in the environment every day tend to overlook these eye sores because they are busy treating clients. However, a client sitting in the lobby has a lot of time, even five minutes, to look around and notice the warts.

By attending to the little things that in the grand scheme do not require that much more effort, your practice will benefit from a more satisfied and confident client base. A client base that will be proud to call your practice home because they receive great treatment results from a caring team committed to their best interest, and in a facility that looks every bit the part of the expectation they have for a high performing medical practice.
