Seizing Opportunities: The Medical Aesthetics Industry Beckons Entrepreneurs

The Medical Aesthetics Industry is an enticing realm for entrepreneurs, and here’s why. This industry has evolved and matured to a point where consolidation is not just a possibility but a logical next step. Its enduring presence and the potential for exponential growth over the next 5 to 10 years have positioned it as a prime investment opportunity. The driving forces behind this growth are manyfold, ranging from rising demand for services to ever-improving treatment outcomes, expanding service offerings, and technological advancements that cater to customer needs and desires.

Consolidation, the process of acquiring and merging multiple businesses, becomes a strategic move when an industry reaches a level of maturity where economies of scale can propel businesses to new heights. It’s typically beyond what a single-unit practice owner can manage effectively. Economies of scale, in this context, refer to multiple businesses benefiting from shared support teams, enhanced buying power, operational expertise, training resources, and more.

Companies that harness economies of scale gain a significant edge over single or limited multi-unit owners. They can operate with greater efficiency and effectiveness, leading to improved operational performance, comprehensive training, expanded service offerings, cost savings, consistent patient experiences, and better patient outcomes, among other advantages.

To underscore the potential for consolidation, let’s examine a seven-state analysis, which represents a cross-section of the entire country, including states from different regions. In this analysis, we considered 1,362 medical aesthetics practices offering a range of services from injectables to skin rejuvenation, body contouring, facials, and hair removal.

Surprisingly, only 12.7% of the 1,362 practices operated more than one location. This figure further dwindles to 5.6% for those operating more than two locations and 3.4% for those with more than three. This data suggests that aesthetics practice owners often encounter challenges when trying to expand beyond one location, and those who do face significant hurdles in reaching three or more.

The reasons for this struggle are clear and have been eloquently expressed by Michael Gerber in his book “The E-Myth Revisited.” Entrepreneurs engrossed in working “in” their business rarely find the time or energy to work “on” it. The demands of patient care, team management, daily operations, and firefighting can be overwhelming.

Expanding a practice is akin to the moment parents realize the transition from one child to two was manageable, but the leap to three is a game-changer. It’s no longer man-to-man defense; it’s a zone defense, where any child can slip by in an instant. Scaling beyond capacity is demanding and can lead to failure. This is where organized operating systems and resources play a pivotal role, enabling businesses to grow and achieve economies of scale.

For independent aesthetics practice owners, the time may be ripe to consider selling or bringing in a partner who can facilitate business growth. If you are the embodiment of your business, it’s prudent to reevaluate your operational and exit strategy. Few potential buyers are interested in acquiring a practice that crumbles after the founder departs. Successful businesses are built on systems and people, not the prowess of one individual.
